Good thoughts, Darin. Just like with alcohol and cigarettes, we need to be careful about who is smoking marijuana.

How have Dr. Howell's discussions on each topic of social interest help further educate us as college students, and functioning citizens of this society? Does everyone agree that our ability to facilitate discussion over controversial topics is helping us as a society, even if it's only a minute amount? How does everyone feel about to polarization of our political culture?

A popular social issue I?d like to bring up is the effects of Marijuana use on teenagers. Marijuana use has become gradually more popular amongst young adults as it has become easier to obtain, and political movements/ media coverage has given exposure to the substance. Although I?m in favor of the decriminalization/ legalization of marijuana, I?ve come to learn that the benefits of marijuana use overshadows the negative impact it has on developing minds. To further explain, our brains continue to develop until around the age of 25, therefore, my point is that teenagers are smoking during a stage of their life that is most crucial for their brain development. Altering the chemicals in our brain consequently causes depression, antisocial behaviors, and ultimately a loss of motivation which we dismiss as just ?Laziness?. As I stated previously, I?m generally in favor of marijuana legalization, however, I think it?s important we present these consequences to the forefront before we continue to promote marijuana use.

Mental health is often overlooked by people, especially college students. 1 in every 3 college students reportedly suffer from mental health issues. Mental health awareness has definitely increased over the years but there is still a lot of work to be done. Psychology can be seen as a "soft science" to some people, but it isn't. Psychology is the study of the human brain, one of our most important organs, and it is beyond crucial for people to recognize how important it is to take care of it. Due to the lack a serious lack of awareness for mental health, people are too afraid to come out when they feel that something is mentally wrong with them. Our mental health system is not nearly as effective and established as it should be.

Great share, Erin. You are right that this definitely affects college students. One obvious solution is to be open in discussions about sex, even in high school. What do the rest of you think?

Hey everyone, did you know the state of Texas doe not require pubic schools to teach sexual education? Even worse, if the school does choose to teach sex ed, it is required to push abstinence first programs, which often are very vague on the topic of birth control- which is likely why Texas has the FOURTH highest teen pregnancy rates in the US. Contraception who? we all think that Coach Carr in Mean Girls is some type of meme when he says "Do not have sex because you will get pregnant... AND DIE", but honestly it is far too similar to Texas' actual "sex education"- if you can even call it that. And before you say, "BUT ERIN! this is supposed to be a problem that affects COLLEGE STUDENTS!" I am going to say- this DOES affect college students because high school students BECOME College students, and due to poor education, they are thrown onto college campuses with lots of freedom, yet they are hardly able to wrap their biscuits!!!!

Pollution in our world today is sky rocketing. People all over are suffering in different ways depending on their geographical location. Although pollution is becoming more of a priority, it continues to be the leading cause of death worldwide. Pollution has been in charge of more than three times the deaths of that of AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis. In addition, a report by the Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health has said that an estimated 9 million premature deaths is from pollution. Which is 15 more than all wars. Low-income and middle-income countries are directly affected due to the fact that they lack resources to contain pollution. Air pollution and water pollution are the major types of pollution that are harming our world. Water pollution causes gastrointestinal diseases because of sewage and toxins being leaked into bodies of water. Therefore, air pollution from big factories and vehicles cause lung cancer and heart disease. Nonetheless, this can all be avoided by more people understanding what pollution is causing and how to fix it. Laws and regulations are being put in place in the low-income countries to stop the death toll form rising. Funding and focusing on this social issue is crucial to end the pollution crisis.
